Wigan
Wigan, England is a large city in Greater Manchester. It lies on the River Douglas. The town lies midway between Manchester (16 miles (25.7km) to its southeast and Liverpool (17 miles (27 km to the southwest). Bolton, to the northeast, and Warrington, to the south, are respectively 10 and 16 km away. Wigan was once part of the Brigantes territory, an ancient Celtic tribe that ruled large parts of northern England. The Roman conquest of Britain saw the Brigantes subjugated and Coccium, a Roman settlement, was established right where Wigan is.
Chester
Chester is located on a small, sandstone ridge at the head of the River Dee estuary. Romans chose the town as their headquarters for Legion XX. It was known as Deva or Castra Devana. However, it was abandoned by the Romans in the early 5th Century. Many Roman remains are still visible, including foundations for the east and north walls. Chester, a prosperous Mercian settlement that traded with northern Wales, Ireland, and the Wirral peninsula by the 10th Century, had its mint established in 970.
