Chester is located on a small, sandstone ridge at the head of the River Dee estuary. Romans chose the town as their headquarters for Legion XX. It was known as Deva or Castra Devana. However, it was abandoned by the Romans in the early 5th Century. Many Roman remains are still visible, including foundations for the east and north walls.
